Shamba Shape Up Season 12 - Shamba Shape Up Series 12 – Episode 11: Rangelands
Welcome to Shamba Shape Up
This week we’re in Baringo County and we’re doing a SSU special on rangelands.
These are the arid and semi arid areas that make up around 80% of Kenya’s landmass. Rangelands vary in size, some are as small as 50 km2.
But most are huge, some in the arid desert areas of Turkana, Marsabit, and Wajir for example are over 5,000 km2. The reason rangelands are important is because pastoralists graze beef cattle there over community lands.
And most of Kenya’s red meat comes from areas like this so they are vital resource for the whole country.
We’ve come to find out about a project that’s helping to restore the environment and bring profits back into rangeland farming. It’s called PRM, Participatory Rangeland Management.
Key Benefit:
• Improved livelihoods from increased livestock and milk production
• As a result: better nutrition for families.
• A healthier and more stable environment thanks to reversing land degradation
• Wildlife conservation
• Less conflicts over resources
• Good size of heard that helps stop land degradation
